National Minority Quality Forum President Calls for Attention to Cancer in Minority Communities at The Atlantic's People Vs. Cancer Summit
Editor Notes

On November 9th, Gary A. Puckrein, President and CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF), took the stage in New York City at The Atlantic Magazine’s People vs. Cancer summit to shed light on the pressing issue of cancer disparities in minority communities. The event, held to explore the multifaceted challenges in the fight against cancer, provided a platform for Puckrein to emphasize the critical need for addressing inequities in healthcare.

Puckrein, a prominent advocate for health equity, delivered a powerful message that resonated with the audience and underscored the urgency of tackling cancer that disproportionately affects minority populations, which he describes as “medically underserved cancer communities”. He highlighted the NMQF’s commitment to reducing cancer disparities as the organization supports Cancer Moonshot 2.0 which the Biden Administration launched last year to halve cancer deaths by 2050.

During the panel discussion entitled “Prevention is Power: Advancements in Early Detection” moderated by The Atlantic’s Jeanne Meserve, Puckrein emphasized the importance of comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of health disparities, including addressing systemic issues that contribute to unequal access to healthcare resources, early detection, and quality treatment options. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts from healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities to create sustainable solutions that bridge the gaps in healthcare outcomes.

“The fight against cancer is not only a medical battle but also a societal one. To truly make progress, we must address the underlying factors that contribute to health disparities in minority communities,” remarked Puckrein.

Puckrein’s presence at The Atlantic’s People vs. Cancer event showcased the NMQF’s dedication to fostering dialogue and collaboration on crucial issues surrounding healthcare disparities. The organization has been at the forefront of advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize health equity and improve healthcare access for underserved communities.

The Atlantic’s People vs. Cancer event brought together leaders, experts, and advocates from various fields to discuss innovative approaches and solutions in the ongoing fight against cancer. Puckrein’s participation added a valuable perspective on the intersection of cancer care and health disparities, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach in the pursuit of improved health outcomes for all.
