Pikeville University located in Pikeville, Kentucky, is set to open a much-needed dental school after receiving a record-breaking anonymous donation of $25 million. The private, Presbyterian institution in the Eastern Kentucky region of Appalachia hopes to open the dental school to students within 3 years. The school already has a college of osteopathic medicine and recently founded a college of optometry. While Kentucky does have two dental schools—one at the University of Kentucky and the other at the University of Louisville—this college will be the first to serve the mountains of Appalachia, a medically underserved area.
