In a move that has sparked concern among health advocates, California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed eliminating Medi-Cal coverage for popular weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Ozempic when prescribed for obesity treatment. These drugs would remain covered only for diabetes management. The proposal comes amid a significant rise in prescriptions and escalating costs, with Medi-Cal spending approximately $733 million on these medications in 2023 alone.
This policy shift could disproportionately impact Black and Hispanic women, who already face higher rates of obesity and related health conditions. Nearly 60% of Black women in the U.S. are classified as obese, increasing their risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers . Traditional weight-loss programs often fall short for Black women due to a lack of cultural tailoring and representation in research, leading to less effective outcomes.
The potential health benefits of GLP-1 receptor agonists like Wegovy extend beyond weight loss. Studies suggest these medications may lower the risk of obesity-related cancers and reduce overall mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Limiting access to these drugs could therefore have broader implications for the health of communities already burdened by health disparities.
The high cost of these medications, often exceeding $1,000 per month, makes them inaccessible for many without insurance coverage. This financial barrier may drive some individuals to seek unregulated alternatives, posing significant health risks. Reports have highlighted the dangers of counterfeit weight-loss drugs sold online, which can lead to severe complications like organ damage and even death.
Advocates urge policymakers to consider the broader impact of such coverage cuts on health equity. Ensuring access to effective weight-loss treatments for underserved populations is crucial in addressing the systemic health disparities that disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic women.
As California deliberates on this proposal, the decision will likely serve as a bellwether for how states balance budgetary constraints with the imperative to promote equitable health outcomes.
