Dreamer Tony Valdovinos Inspires a New Musical [Video]

¡Americano! a musical about empowering the Latino community hits Broadway.

Based on the real life events of Tony Valdovinos, the Off- Broadway musical has been in rehearsal and pre-performance runs in New York City since March and is finally ready for opening night on April 21^st at New World Stages. Tony Valdovinos is excited to be in New York City supporting the cast and crew and bringing awareness to his story.

Tony’s story takes us back to the attacks of 09/11 on the United States which prompted him to enlist in the Marines upon his 18th birthday. Upon enlisting, he discovers that he is actually an undocumented immigrant who was brought to the US by his parents when he was 2 years old.

He is disappointed, confused, and angry at the situation which is at odds with his life-long identity as a patriotic American. With a desire to do something of importance for his country and the support of his family and community behind him, Tony realizes that although he is a DREAMer, he can make an impact in other ways.

Seven years ago he shared the intimate details of his life with the show’s writing team. It was an inspirational authentic story of a DREAMer and the successes, failures, challenges and hardships he faced during this period of his life. They saw it as a great story to humanize the American story of immigrants, DREAMers, and the Latino experience that DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) has on families. The show originally premiered in Valdovinos’ home state of Arizona to great reviews and is now getting ready to inspire New Yorkers and all the people who visit New York in search of their own dreams.

Today, Tony is 31 years old and the owner and founder of La Machine Consulting. In his day to day life, he works to mobilize voter turnout for political campaigns, working with elected officials and aspiring leaders to engage with voters and build their support. He is an activist pressing for policies and programs that will better communities that are ignored and disenfranchised. It’s a core mission of Tony’s to make sure they are represented.

Tony tells us that he learned so much from his parents’ principles of working hard and leading from the heart. He shares his entrepreneurial journey with us in this audio interview.
