Individuals do not experience the world through a single identity. Race, ethnicity, language, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, geography, socioeconomic status, and other lived experiences can intersect to shape access to care, interactions with the healthcare system, and health outcomes. In this National Minority Quality Forum webinar, “Intersectionality and Representation: Why Inclusive Data Matters,” experts examine why inclusive and disaggregated data are essential for understanding differences within and across communities that may be hidden by broad population categories. Drawing on qualitative research grounded in intersectionality, the panel explores the collection of race and ethnicity data and sexual orientation and gender identity data, including how overlapping identities can influence trust and willingness to self-identify.
