How vehicle pollution can be harmful to pregnant women:

  • Pregnant women exposed to traffic-related air pollution have a higher risk of serious neonatal complications.
  • A study from UT Southwestern Medical Center found that pregnant patients living in urban areas with elevated nitrogen dioxide had higher rates of preterm birth and other adverse outcomes.
  • Air pollution from heavy traffic can harm women during pregnancy and affect their children even after delivery.
  • The study established a link between air pollution exposure and adverse perinatal outcomes, but did not prove causation.
  • How vehicle pollution can be harmful to pregnant women

Pregnant women exposed to traffic-related air pollution have a higher risk of serious neonatal complications, According to an article in a study from UT Southwestern Medical Center. The study found that pregnant patients living in urban areas with elevated nitrogen dioxide had higher rates of preterm birth and other adverse outcomes. Air pollution from heavy traffic can harm women during pregnancy and affect their children even after delivery. However, the study only established a link and did not prove causation.

Higher risk of preterm birth and adverse outcomes

The study conducted by UT Southwestern Medical Center matched records from over 60,000 births with air-monitoring data. It revealed that pregnant women living in urban areas with elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide, commonly found in vehicle exhaust, had higher rates of preterm birth. The risk of babies being born before 28 weeks, considered extremely preterm, was also higher in these areas. Additionally, the study found an association between traffic-related air pollution and more neonatal intensive care unit admissions, respiratory problems in infants, and other adverse outcomes.

    Long-term effects on children

Air pollution from heavy traffic can have lasting effects on children even after delivery. The study showed that children born to pregnant women exposed to traffic-related air pollution were more likely to experience respiratory conditions in childhood and adulthood. While the exact mechanism is not fully understood, the findings highlight the importance of reducing air pollution for the well-being of both pregnant women and their children.
