Immigrants’ Daughter OKed For Vermont Supreme Court

A wave of hate crimes against Asian Americans since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has been widely condemned and triggered the passage of the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act by Congress last year. “Gut-wrenching attacks on some of the most vulnerable people in our nation — the elderly, low-wage workers, women — brutally attacked simply by walking outside or waiting for a bus,” President Joe Biden noted last May. Asian American women suffer twice as many incidents of harassment and violence as Asian American men, he added.

And yet the problem persists. This month, a 67-year-old Yonkers, New York woman from the Philippines was punched 125 times by 42-year-old Tammel Esco, who also kicked and spit on her, and used anti-Asian slurs, according to a report by CBS New York. “The victim is well liked by neighbors,” CBS said.

Last month, Korean-American ad executive Christina Yuan Lee was reportedly stabbed more than 40 times by Assmad Nash who followed her into her New York Chinatown building. Lee had worked on campaigns for Google, Twix, Equinox, TOMS, Cole Haan and ALDO, the New York Post reported.

A more positive trend: Asian Americans have been making progress in high-profile government jobs in New England. Boston voters elected Michelle Wu, the daughter of Taiwan immigrants, as mayor last November. This year, Cambodian immigrant Sokhary Chau became mayor in Lowell, Massachusetts, home to a large Cambodian immigrant community.

The latest example of progress came on Friday when Vermont’s Senate confirmed Nancy Waples, the daughter of an immigrant family from mainland China, as a member of the state’s supreme court. She was approved by a vote of 27-0 by the Vermont Senate, according to a report by the VTDigger website, after being nominated for the job by Governor Phil Scott in February. “Her story, perspective and skills will make her an exceptional justice,” Scott said in a statement last month of Waples, who most recently has been a Vermont Superior Court judge since 2015.

Waples’ parents immigrated to the U.S. from China via Canada. Her family earned a living, working together, in their small Chinese restaurant outside of New York City; growing up working in her parents’ restaurant, she learned to speak English at the age of nine, according to the Scott statement. “My parents traveled halfway around the world with literally nothing more than the clothes on their backs to live in a place that didn’t speak their language, where they didn’t have any friends or family,” Waples was quoted as saying. “They came here seeking greater opportunities and longed for a life of dignity and decency,” she said. “I hope my appointment inspires other people of color to reach outside of their comfort zone and climb the same ladder I climbed, and I will be there to lend my hand.”

Waples earlier worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York City. She also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Vermont. Waples, who is married to Burlington lawyer Greg Waples, has served as president of the board of Spectrum Youth and Services, president of the Vermont Youth Orchestra, public relations chair for the Lake Champlain Junior League and volunteered in clinics and provided translation services to the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. She holds degrees from the College of William and Mary and St. John’s University School of Law.

Prominent Asian Americans in business include Zoom founder Eric Yuan and Nvidia founder Jensen Huang; Nathan Chen was the first Asian American to win a gold medal in men’s figure skating at the recent Olympics games held in Beijing.
