Lifting the Burden: Manuela’s Experience as a Full-Time Caregiver for a Loved One with mBC
Lifting the Burden: Manuela’s Experience as a Full-Time Caregiver for a Loved One with mBC

At just 27 years old, Manuela from Ohio has taken on a role few her age ever expect—full-time caregiver for her aunt living with metastatic breast cancer (mBC). Her experience reveals the hidden weight that caregivers often carry, particularly around finances and end-of-life planning.

“End-of-life and financial support are not talked about enough. After so much financial investment in a loved one with mBC, you realize how much debt has been accumulated over time.”

Manuela also emphasizes the importance of culturally relevant and emotionally resonant community spaces for patients and caregivers alike:

“I will find value in being a part of these communities especially if it’s easily accessible and moderated by people who relate (same race, maybe even someone with mBC, caregiver, health workers)…I would participate twice a week, definitely more during tough times. Generally, if the content is relevant and I form real connections, I will participate more frequently because I will always have something to look forward to…The real talk will make me return, real stories from people like me…tips from dealing with fatigue to body image to navigating healthcare to wellness tips to intimacy to grief to faith to finances to culture to affirmations to Q&As with a Latino or Black doctor to other tools that are relevant to mBC.”

Support Our Sisters: Supporting the Supporters

Manuela’s insights reflect a critical yet often overlooked reality: caregivers need support too. Support Our Sisters is designed to provide that space—not only for women living with mBC but also for the loved ones who walk beside them.

Through culturally sensitive programming and peer-to-peer storytelling, Support Our Sisters helps address the practical, emotional, and financial challenges families face, making sure caregivers like Manuela feel equipped and understood. The initiative prioritizes real stories and real talk—creating a sense of community where people can share challenges ranging from navigating healthcare systems to coping with grief and maintaining faith and wellness.
