Mental health on college campuses a focus for NC officials – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — State leaders have turned their attention to the mental health of North Carolina’s college students.

On Wednesday, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services partnered with the state’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities to host a mental health summit.

The event, titled Peeling Back the Layers of Minority Mental Health, was billed as an opportunity to assess the needs of minority students and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on them.

A discussion panel featured students and representatives from across North Carolina’s HBCU network. They addressed the specific issues faced on HBCU campuses and how administration is assisting both students and faculty with managing the lasting mental health impacts of the pandemic.

Gov. Roy Cooper also had mental health on his mind on Wednesday.

Cooper met with the U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and students, faculty and staff from North Carolina Central University about the school’s work to expand and strengthen mental health services.

“We know the past few years have been challenging and we want to ensure our students have the tools they need to succeed,” Cooper said. “We will continue to focus on expanding access to mental health services for our students and partnering with strong institutions like North Carolina Central University to make it happen.”

Last May, the governor directed $5 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding to support mental health initiatives at colleges and community colleges in the UNC system.

North Carolina universities are using the funding to provide a 24-hour crisis hotline for students and to train as many as 10,000 faculty, staff and students on mental health first aid.
