Over 40% of U.S. Adults With High Cholesterol Aren’t Getting Treated
New research indicates that many Americans with high cholesterol are not receiving the necessary treatment. High cholesterol is a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease and remains a prevalent issue in the United States. Although there have been improvements in cholesterol levels and public health messaging, certain groups, including Hispanic, Black, undereducated, and low-income individuals, are still lagging behind. This poses a risk as high cholesterol is a silent risk factor for more serious cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is crucial to improve awareness and treatment, especially in underserved communities.
Research Findings
The research, published in JAMA Cardiology, aimed to examine the relationship between high cholesterol, awareness, and treatment. The study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2020. Within the 23,667 participants aged 20 and older, 8% had clinically high LDL cholesterol, and 3% had very high LDL cholesterol. The study also classified individuals based on their knowledge and treatment of high cholesterol. It found that a significant portion of individuals with high cholesterol were unaware of their condition and were not receiving treatment.

Addressing Knowledge Gaps and Treatment Disparities
Improving awareness of high cholesterol is essential, particularly in underserved communities. Public health messaging has made progress, but certain groups, such as Hispanic, Black, undereducated, and low-income individuals, still face knowledge gaps and treatment disparities. Efforts should focus on targeted outreach, education, and access to healthcare services to ensure that everyone, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, has the necessary knowledge and resources to address high cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
