The Kane County Health Department, in partnership with the Aurora African American Health Coalition and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, will sponsor the 15th annual health fair from 9 a.m. to noon June 11 at the Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora.

The free event is open to everyone and includes vaccinations, speakers, vendors, activities for children, giveaways, fitness demonstrations, a farmers market and more, organizers said.

In addition, the event will feature health screenings at no cost. Advance registration and an eight-hour fast are required for the screenings. For registration information, go to AuroraAAHealthcoalition.org/annual-health-fair.

Also at the event, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management will be offering classes in emergency and disaster preparedness and first aid geared towards children in first through fifth grades.

State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, will host the annual Recycle and Shred Day event from 9 a.m. to noon June 18 at the Waterford parking lot at 1677 Montgomery Road in Aurora.

The event is a public service to give citizens the opportunity to get rid of items with personally identifiable information, unused medications, phones, used books and approved electronics, organizers said.

“This event has been tremendously popular over the years as we all have old bills, bank statements, receipts and similar items that need to be shred properly to protect us from identity theft,” said Kifowit in a press release about the event. “It is also important to help the environment which is why our event gives everyone a chance to dispose of approved electronic items and unused medications.”

The event has a charitable element in that phones, eyeglasses and books that are collected are donated to community organizations.

Collected cellphones will be donated to Mutual Ground, an Aurora based non-profit organization offering a range of services for victims of domestic and sexual violence and those suffering from substance abuse.

Lions Clubs International will receive the donated eyeglasses, and the donated books will be given to area literacy programs such as Scarce in Addison and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office for the use of individuals while they are incarcerated.

There will also be a prescription drug and over-the-counter medication collection provided by Fox Metro.

The disposal event will be contactless so everyone is asked to remain in their car.

For electronic recycling examples of the items that will be accepted are computer towers, microwave ovens, DVD players, VCRs, printers, fax machines and video game consoles. No TVs or computer monitors will be accepted, organizers said.

The Oswegoland Heritage Association, partnering with the Oswegoland Park District, will hold a history walk at noon June 12 up and down Main Street between Jefferson and Washington Street in downtown Oswego to discuss some of the changes to the village’s central area over the years.

Once home to three auto dealerships, a cigar factory, a roller skating rink, harness makers and farm implement dealers, the community’s downtown business district has dramatically changed during the past 150 years.

Oswegoland Heritage Association guides Ted Clauser and Linda Dean will point out historic landmarks, talk about the types of stores and businesses that first appeared when the village was newly formed in the 1830s, discuss the critical role that fires have had in shaping the village and explore the significant changes that have occurred over the years, event organizers said.

The tour, aimed at those 16 years old and older, will begin and end at the Little White School Museum, 72 Polk St., and last for about an hour.
