Malaysia is planning to fully reopen its borders from March 1, easing restrictions that have been in place for two years since the pandemic first hit the country in March 2020.
The decision is supported by most members of the National Recovery Council, said Mohamed Azmin Ali, the country’s senior minister at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
The border reopening is expected to have a positive impact on Malaysia’s trade, industrial and tourism activities, he said Tuesday.
The decision comes amid a rise in Covid-19 cases as the Omicron wave begins to sweep across the Southeast Asia country. New daily cases breached the 10,000 mark again over the weekend and health officials say infections have yet to peak.
