“My Life Matters”: Lakia’s Journey with mBC and the Power of Peer Support

At 44, Lakia from Delaware has faced the challenges of metastatic breast cancer (mBC) while navigating its impact on both her physical health and self-confidence. One of her biggest frustrations lies in the often-overlooked need for comprehensive dental care for cancer patients:

“The one thing that bothers me is the lack of affordable dental coverage, and I wish someone had told me about the importance of consistent dental check-ups before all of the decay. Fixing my smile would make me whole again. I really don’t feel as confident. It’s a constant reminder of my disease and the long-term journey I have.”

Her experience reflects how the effects of mBC extend far beyond treatment rooms, shaping emotional well-being and self-image.

Lakia is also passionate about elevating conversations around the health of Black women, underscoring the importance of breaking silence and stigma:

“My life matters! Let’s talk about Black Breast Health and the dangerous secrets we are keeping from each other.”

Finding support from other women who truly understand has been life-changing for her:

“I definitely felt I was on an island of one when I was seeking answers and support. It was most helpful to have other women that could relate without me having to say too much or explain how I was feeling—they just knew! I was diagnosed and had 2 young children and being able to get support on how to support them was also crucial. There are so many unique areas that can only be truly supported by peers.”

Support Our Sisters: Addressing the Unspoken Needs

Lakia’s story highlights the importance of addressing the full spectrum of needs faced by women with mBC—physical, emotional, financial, and cultural. Support Our Sisters works to meet these needs by offering a space where patients can share their stories, access resources, and connect with others who understand their journey.

By amplifying voices like Lakia’s, Support Our Sisters is working to remove barriers to care, increase awareness of critical issues like dental health and family support, and foster open dialogue about the unique challenges faced by Black and Hispanic women living with metastatic breast cancer.
