At a time like the current one, when the lack of essential energy affects the lives of more than 34 million people in the European Union, BBVA reflects in a monograph on the measures that must be implemented to combat energy poverty. With the help of different experts, the bank analyzes the importance of facing this problem, taking into account that it is a basic right that is essential for a fair ecological transition to materialize throughout the world.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, the ECLAC has put the number of people without electricity at 17 million. On the other hand, 75 million do not have fuel or clean technologies for cooking. In countries like Spain, energy poverty affects more than eight million people. This fact not only implies the lack of essential access to energy to carry out day-to-day actions such as showering, refrigerating food or using household appliances. It also increases mortality and generates numerous pathologies, as indicated in the latest report by Doctors of the World.
The pandemic and rising electricity prices have increased the risk of energy poverty. This is already a concept that occupies the political and social agenda. For this reason, BBVA addresses in its latest monograph ‘The right to energy for a fairer world’. In this new publication about sustainability, The bank – based on reports and the testimony of experts in the field – shows through analysis work the importance of facing the energy crisis.
