At only 27 years old, Deltra from Connecticut faced a life-changing metastatic breast cancer (mBC) diagnosis. Early in her journey, she recognized that finding hope and connection would be as essential as her medical treatment.
“I recognized early on in my diagnosis that hope and connection were key to survival. Most of my community is online, and it’s especially valuable to have spaces just for advanced stagers. The [Support Our Sisters] FB support group is an important invitation to dive deeper into the community being built. Patients’ lived experiences aren’t just being sought after; the need for support is being honored. It’s more give and take. Hearing patients out and trying to fill needs in this way is incredibly supportive and beautiful. Having people share their stories is important. The people make the space work.”
Deltra’s words highlight the power of community, especially for younger adults navigating advanced-stage cancer. Online spaces and peer networks have become lifelines, allowing patients to share their stories and build bonds with those who truly understand their experience.
Support Our Sisters: Creating Meaningful Connections
Deltra’s perspective reflects the heart of Support Our Sisters, an initiative that values the lived experiences of patients as vital to improving care and fostering hope. By amplifying these voices, the program provides a space for meaningful connection—whether online or in person—where stories drive change and community becomes a source of strength.
Support Our Sisters continues to honor the give-and-take Deltra describes, ensuring that resources and patient networks address real needs while celebrating the resilience and solidarity of women living with mBC.
