DISTRICT MENTOR TEACHER - HIGH SCHOOL (200 day) job with Milwaukee Public Schools

The role of the District Mentor Teacher (DMT) is to provide mentoring support to new educators throughout their first year as an MPS teacher. The DMT provides mentoring around classroom management, instructional practices, and district related systems. All District Mentor Teachers must complete mentor training and fully utilize the New Teacher Center mentoring curriculum, practices, and reporting system when providing support to new educators. District Mentor Teachers must additionally provide professional development, seminars, and training sessions to new educators, school based mentors, and district staff.

This position will be assigned to the high schools and applicants must have high-school teaching experience.

Other Information

As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority. That’s why all offers of employment are contingent on the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (currently one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine) to pass the pre-employment requirements. Individuals with medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs that prevent them from getting the vaccine may request an accommodation from the vaccine requirement.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants must have:

  • a current educator license from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
  • A minimum of five (5) years of exemplary/satisfactory classroom teaching experience in an urban/metropolitan district as a fully licensed, high school teacher
  • Exemplary experience mentoring beginning teachers in a full-release mentoring model
  • Recent urban teaching experience and experience leading and designing professional development

Applicants with the following experience and credentials are preferred:

  • a master’s degree in an education related field
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work with a diverse population of people
  • Proficient in using MS Office software, including MS Word and Excel, and knowledge of other programs and various forms of technology

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and assistance to the District Induction Specialists. Manages the caseloads in assigned area.
  • Attends Regional Team Meetings to keep updated on current events and status of teachers within the region.
  • Works with supervisors to differentiate support of new educators and permit/intern teachers. Establishes an inductions support system for educators to share information at the District and School Level.
  • Develops and coordinates professional development sessions for District Induction Specialists.
  • Collaborates with various district personnel to and departments to provide support that leads to improved instruction and student achievement.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the New Educator Orientation.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of monthly New Educator Seminars.
  • Provides guidance and support to new district educators.
  • Actively supports Induction’s commitment to support the educator effectiveness model.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
