WASHINGTON โ In a major announcement today, President Donald J. Trump introduced a new initiative called the “Great Healthcare Plan,” aimed at lowering medical costs for all Americans. The plan focuses on giving families more control over their healthcare spending and making the cost of medicine much lower.
The announcement, made on January 15, 2026, marks a new direction for the countryโs healthcare system. It moves away from sending government money to large insurance companies and instead focuses on sending that support directly to individuals and families.

“The government is going to pay the money directly to you. It goes to you and then you take the money and buy your own health care. Nobody’s ever heard of that before and that’s the way it is. The big insurance companies lose and the people of our country win.”
Whatโs New: Money Directly to Families
The biggest change in this plan is how the government handles healthcare subsidies. Traditionally, billions of dollars are paid to insurance companies to help lower the cost of plans under the Affordable Care Act. Under the new proposal, the President wants to stop these “payoffs” to corporations.
Instead, the plan suggests sending that money directly to you through personal health savings accounts. The idea is that you can then use that money to “shop” for the best healthcare or insurance that fits your family’s needs.
Why It Matters for Our Community
For many families of color, high premiums and “hidden” medical costs have long been a barrier to getting good care. Community leaders often point out that when costs are confusing, people are more likely to skip important check-ups or dental visits.
โHealthcare works best when it is transparent and accessible,โ says Marcus Johnson, a community health advocate. โBy requiring hospitals and insurers to post their actual prices in plain English, families can avoid the stress of surprise bills and make choices that fit their budgets.โ
Slashing Drug Prices through “TrumpRx.gov”
The plan also features a major focus on prescription drugs. The administration has reached agreements with 14 major pharmaceutical companies to bring American drug prices down to match the lowest prices paid in other countries.
Starting this month, many of these savings will be available through a new website called TrumpRx.gov. The President stated that some medications for chronic conditionsโlike diabetes, asthma, and heart diseaseโcould see price cuts of 300% to 500%.
