USPTO Says More Minorities Are Using Pro Bono Program

By Britain Eakin (March 23, 2022, 10:08 PM EDT) — The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said Wednesday that minorities who have been systematically excluded from the innovation ecosystem are turning to the agency’s pro bono program to file patents.

In 2021, the agency’s regional pro bono offices collected voluntary demographic data showing that 30% of applicants who used the USPTO’s pro bono program identified as Black. Meanwhile, 5.6% were Asian, Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, and 1.5% said they were Native American. All of those numbers are higher than their respective existing proportions in the U.S., according to 2010 census data, interim USPTO Director Drew Hirshfeld said in a blog post….
