Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a significant cause of childhood blindness and visual impairment around the world. It is a neovascular disease of the developing retina with a complex pathogenesis that is not fully understood. Low gestational age (GA), very low birth weight (BW), and hyperoxia are known dominant risk factors. Since the Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity (CRYO-ROP) trial, the question of the role of race on ROP has been debated. That large multicenter trial unexpectedly reported that Black infants had a lower incidence of threshold ROP compared with White infants.1 Other studies in North America2 and the United Kingdom3 supported this finding.
