Emancipet opened a low cost veterinary clinic inside a PetSmart store in north Houston, its third in the Houston area, as part of the nonprofit’s mission to expand affordable veterinary care in underserved communities across Texas. The clinic held a grand opening Wednesday at 13830 Northwest Freeway.
Over the last seven years, Emancipet has provided veterinary care through more than 214,000 vet visits at its Houston clinics, which opened in the East End neighborhood in 2015 and at Monroe Medical Plaza in southeast Houston in 2020. The clinics offer preventative services such as vaccines, microchipping, and blood tests starting at $15, and spay/neuter surgeries for $89.

The Emancipet Tidwell clinic represents the first retail store-based location inside PetSmart, which provided more than $2.2 million in grant funding through PetSmart Charities.
“Today, 70% of American homes include pets,” Aimee Gilbreath, president at PetSmart Charities, said in an announcement. “When pet parents — especially seniors — can no longer afford to care for their pets, they often have no choice but to give up their beloved family members. Investing in this critical partnership with Emancipet leverages their expertise and delivers affordable care that will help keep pet families together in the community they serve. The benefits of caring for pets shouldn’t belong exclusively to the privileged.”
Founded in 1999, Emancipet veterinarians have provided care through over 1.5 million veterinary visits and have spayed or neutered nearly 500,000 dogs and cats. The organization served nearly 60,000 pets in the Houston area in 2021. Other locations are in Austin, Houston, Killeen, Pflugerville and Philadelphia.
