As pioneers in modifying the body’s immune response, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) was working to advance lupus research through an innovative clinical trial portfolio that explores multiple potential treatments. To ensure these efforts would reflect the needs of those affected by lupus, BMS prioritized patient recruitment strategies to engage a diverse population. With lupus occurring three times more often in African American women than in Caucasian women, BMS recognized the need for tailored, trust-building recruitment tactics. Aware of the historical mistrust within minority communities towards clinical trials, BMS adopted a grassroots approach to educate and build trust among underrepresented populations.

Partnering with the I Choose Life Foundation (ICLF), Jumo Health organized community events in Memphis, Dallas, and Los Angeles—cities chosen for their strong community ties and proximity to trial sites. These events brought together community and faith-based leaders, health advocates, and local business owners, who were provided with accessible, culturally relevant materials to educate their communities about lupus and assist those considering BMS clinical trials in navigating the pre-screening process.
