For years, the beloved San Antonio Elvis impersonator has set up an unofficial perch at the Market Square restaurant, always ready for a photo opportunity. The coronavirus pandemic has forced restaurants and residents to make some adjustments in response to mitigating the virus, but the Elvis impersonator is back.

Elvis had Memphis, but San Antonio’s Hispanic Elvis had Market Square and the papel picado-lined ceilings of Mi Tierra set the scenes for his beloved dance moves. Tributes have poured in from locals, businesses, and visitors as the city mourns the loss of the vibrant personality loved by generations. Mi Tierra, where Hispanic Elvis was often seen dining and eating with customers, also has a tribute planned for him.

The Market Square mainstay has dedicated its walls to Latino luminaries. The “American Dream” mural covering a wall in one of its main dining rooms includes past and current legends like the late Henry B. Gonzalez, former Texas Rep. Leticia Van de Putte, and actress Eva Longora. Former Mi Tierra employees have also joined the sprawling artwork.  A corner of the same room is dedicated to an altar to Queen of Tejano Selena. The restaurant tells MySA the beloved regular will soon join the honors.

Megann Pettit, spokeswoman for the restaurant, says La Familia Cortez, the family that owns and runs Mi Tierra, Pico de Gallo, Mi Familia, and Las Margaritas, is planning a “large altar” in the lobby of the restaurant, where Hispanic Elvis was often seen. Due to the heavy traffic Mi Tierra experiences during the ongoing Fiesta, the altar will be set up after the 10-day celebration.

In the meantime, a photo of the San Antonio star will be added to an existing altar. Pettit says the Cortez family is thinking of more permanent ways to honor Hispanic Elvis.

Early Thursday, March 31, George Cisneros, the youngest brother of Hispanic Elvis, confirmed his passing. Hispanic Elvis was first hospitalized in January with an esophagus infection and COVID-19. He was 76 at the time. Days later, he was released from the hospital. His family then shared the news that he had entered hospice care in March.

A GoFundMe was launched by the family to help with medical expenses when Hispanic Elvis first became ill. Fans are now donating to help with his funeral expenses in the wake of his death. Some supporters shared memories of meeting Hispanic Elvis. A donor remembered introducing their son, who was taking his graduation photos, to Hispanic Elvis in 2021. The donation note says San Antonio’s Elvis, who was always camera ready, showed the teen how to pose.
