STORY: Trudeau’s comments came during a visit to the traditional Madahoki Farm of the Algonquin peoples.
The Prime Minister has made indigenous reconciliation a priority in his government. Canada’s indigenous peoples suffer from higher levels of poverty and violence, and shorter life expectancies.
Trudeau also spoke out against the brutal history of Canada’s residential school system. For 165 years ending in 1996, the school system forcibly separated indigenous children from their families, subjecting them to starvation and physical and sexual abuse.
The discovery of more than 1,000 unmarked graves at two former schools last year reopened the deep wounds left by the European colonisation of Canada and the subsequent efforts to assimilate indigenous cultures.
